World news is a type of news reporting that covers events around the globe. While this is not the main topic of every news outlet, many do devote a significant portion of their coverage to it. World news is usually a subset of hard news and is often covered by specialist reporters or foreign desk journalists.
An example of world news is a story about an event that could impact people in many different places around the world, such as a natural disaster or a war. World news also includes stories about business, sports, and other topics of global interest. These types of articles are typically covered by a variety of international newspapers, radio and television stations, as well as some online outlets.
The Weekly World News (WWN) was a tabloid newspaper that published mostly fictional “news” stories from 1979 to 2007. The paper’s outlandish cover stories and satirical approach made it an international pop-culture icon. The WWN’s Bat Boy character was even parodied by rapper Travis Scott in his 2021 single Escape Plan / Mafia.
The WWN was known for publishing graphic photos from post-autopsies of serial killer Ted Bundy on its front page. The paper also infamously ran photos of an obviously-altered Elvis Presley. In later years, the WWN focused more on supernatural news stories like sightings of Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster. It also devoted a number of stories to aliens and other cryptids, with a particular focus on half-animal half-human hybrids such as merpeople, catwomen, and frog babies.
